Veiling 2013 suksesvol en verby!
Auction 2013 with great success completed!
Date:
June 2013

LEES MEER...

What a great feeling now that the auction is over, all animals have been sold and have been safely delivered to their new owners.
Our prediction that 2013 would be the year of the Bonsmara, came true! Difficult times like now, force farmer to make rational decisions and not to think with emotions - which ultimately favours breeds and cattle that can still offer an income during dry years. Farmers should be able to survive financially during these dry seasons. The Hartebeestloop 2013 Auction slogan “Good genetics do not know that it is dry” has been proven to be true. Farmers have relied on cattle that have performed well in the past on their farms. We would like to share 10 thoughts and statistics with you about the Farmers’ Day and the Auction.

Gedagtes oor die Hartebeestloop/Agra Boeredag 2013

Please click here to jumpstart to the rest of the English section.

Res van die Afrikaanse gedeelte.

Volgende jaar maak ons weer so!

10 Thoughts and statistics about the Farmers’ Day:

  1. We have found that good speakers - that have insight into their field of expertise, are pioneers of new ideas and that understand the farmers - attract visitors. This year’s Farmers Day was attended by the highest number of visitors to date. More than 200 people came to listen to Barry Symons' lecture on "21 Days"", Prof. Willie Esterhuyse, Dr Hannes Dreyer's lecture on Veldbulls and Dr Kenneth Botha's lecture on "Maksimum ruvoerinname, maksimum produksie - die rol van die rumen". Please also see Kenneth's powerpoint lecture on our website regarding this topic.
  2. The topics of the lectures should be current and should be applicable to the prevailing environmental and economic conditions of 2013. The speakers successfully addressed the uncertainty about the role that farming plays and farming successfully during dry periods.
It was felt that one topic/lecture/domonstration should be a practical, and it should be on something that we all know, but are a little bit rusted on - a "back-to-basics" topic.
  3. Bring the products and services to the farmers. Agra, Feed Master, Standard Bank, Agri Bank, First National Bank and many other companies were present at the Framers Day to meet the farmer in his “backyard”. This year the Farmers' Day almost had a pleasant fair-like feeling with all the little exhibitions tents.
  4. The farming communities are eager to learn, appreciate knowledge, products and services that are offered on their doorstep, enjoys socializing, loves good eating and values being among fellow breeders and cattle. Gone are the days that you just brought cattle to the auction!
  5. We found that 18% of the visitors already attended 6 previous Farmers Days at Hartebeestloop – meaning that they have never missed a Farmers Day.
  6. It was only a pleasure to have worked with Agra to have made the Farmers' Day possible. They were super organized and had thought of the minutest details. Effort, money spent and hard work like these, will surely and hopefully result in huge benefits for them. Everybody had only good things to say about Agra. Thank you Agra and well done! Next year we will do the same!
  7. 48% of the visitors had attended 4 or more Farmer Days.
  8. A total of 71% of the visitors had attended 3 or more Farmer Days.
  9. A further 12 % indicated that it was their first visit to Hartebeestloop Farmers Day.
  10. Three years is a magical number to us. It takes 3 years on average for a person to purchase a Bonsmara bull since their first visit to the Hartebeestloop Farmers Day. It does not necessarily mean that he/she buys at the Hartebeestloop auction but they will buy a Bonsmara eventually.
There is a marked difference between just hosting an auction and organising an “event” for the entire farming community.

10 Gedagtes en statistieke oor die Hartebeestloop veiling

10 Thoughts and statistics about the Hartebeestloop Auction 2013

  1. Make a lot of effort with your breeding program and pay special attention to the quality of your animals during the good years as this will carry you through the drier years. It seems if money and time for marketing purposes carries little value during years with less than adequate rainfall.
  2. A total of 79% buyers at the 2013 Hartebeestloop auction have previously bought cattle from us.
  3. 63% of the buyers at the 2013 Hartebeestloop auction have bought cattle at two or more occasions from us.
  4. 51% of the buyers at the 2013 Hartebeestloop auction have bought cattle at three or more times from us.
  5. Currently there are 8 groups of farmers that work together, buy together and then rotate the bulls among themselves. Some of these groups are in their 5th auction cycle meaning that they have bought at 5 separate occasions from Hartebeestloop.
  6. A total of 25% of the bulls offered on auction (15 out of 59) was sold to stud breeders.
  7. A total of 75% of the bulls offered on auction (44 out of 59) was sold to commercial farmers. A good relationship has been established with the commercial farmers and our primary target and main market is still the commercial meat producer.
  8. At Hartebeestloop we emphasize selection of characteristics that will increase the farmer’s income. Meat characteristics (specifically carcass yield) and outstanding reproduction potential is important to commercial farmers.
  9. The role that the Bonsmara plays in crossbreeding programs is becoming more evident. 41% of the commercial buyers have indicated that their bulls are used for crossbreeding purposes as well.
  10. It seems that there is no place on the Namibian Bonsmara market for the so called “average bull”. Everyone has worked hard to train the commercial farmer and these farmers realise the value of a good bull!

Dankie aan almal! / Thank you to everybody!

We really enjoyed having so many people at the Farmers Day and Auction. There was such a positive vibe amongst the farming communities and we enjoyed being part of the vibe. Our sincere thanks to all who attended the Farmers Day and Auction. Let us do the same next year!

A special word of thanks to all who registered for the auction. The under-bidders are as important as the successful bidders. To all the under-bidders - we trust that you will get your Bonsmara bulls and hope to see you again at the Hartebeestloop Auction 2014! To the successful buyers - many thanks for the trust in our breeding philosophies and our cattle. They will not disappoint you. We stand by our animals!
