Financing for auction animals
Date:
April 2013

Why would you pay from your own pocket for a bull if the bank can assist you financially? Think about this carefully; there are many payment options available that can assist you to afford a better bull at a better price.
For the cattle farmer in Namibia the purchasing of a bull is a major and important decision. A lot has been written about top genetics for your herd. As farmers we are thoroughly prepared for what we have to look out for when choosing a bull. However, there is minimal information available about the financing of bulls and very few buyers make use of the outstanding financing schemes that are currently available on the Namibian market.

Rest of the English Section.

Today high-quality breeding bulls are a big investment and the price per bull can vary from N$ 40,000 up to N$ 500,000 or even more! Economically it is acceptable practice to finance long term assets with long term debt, medium term assets with medium term debt while short term debt are paid for with cash or overdraft facilities.

Is your Bonsmara bull a long term asset? Yes – it is!

Most of the bulls are purchased at 2,5 – 3 years of age and is used at least until the age of 10 years. Obviously a bull that will be used for 7 years or longer can be regarded as a medium or long term asset.

In the past financing schemes for bulls were not available to buyers. Farmers were forced to purchase bulls either with cash or overdraft facilities. Often this contributed to farmers buying poorer genetics than what they would have preferred to buy. Financing for houses, in which we live and cars that we drive (both assets do not generate a financial return), has always been readily available. Financing for bulls that generate a financial return was not available in the past. Hartebeestloop has changed all of this and financing schemes are now easily available for acquiring top genetics.

What is meant with “Bull Return”

What is meant with “Bull Return” and where does it fit in with the financing that is available now?

  • If you roughly calculate in the current scenario that a bull delivers 35 calves per year at 220 kg each and N$ 13 per kg (N$ 2 860), the gross income from this bull will be N$ 100 100 per year.
  • The bull can be used for 7-8 years which is longer than the life time of most vehicles!
  • When the bull is 10 years old it still has a slaughter value of about N$ 6 500.

It is so obvious that a different perspective is necessary when it comes to investing in a new bull. A bull is definitely an asset and remains an asset until the end.

What about farmers that have 2 breeding seasons?

If the bull delivers 70 calves per year for 7 years then is comes to 490 calves over the bull’s production lifespan. There are many farmers and bulls like these in the business! Then the financial gain looks even better!

Financing is available for 12 to 36 months and even longer.

How does this influence the numbers?

  • A bull valued at N$ 50 000 which is financed over 24 months at prime rate, will give you a monthly instalment of N$ 2 290. This compares well with the value of one weaner.
  • If the repayment is extended to 36 months the monthly instalment will be N$ 1,425.24 only. And this while high quality genetics are working hard in your herd!
  • If you should shorten the repayment term to 12 months then the monthly instalment will be N$ 3 910.39 which is not even the cost of a replacement heifer.
  • For the stud breeder these figures will look completely different and will make even more economic sense.

Hartebeestloop Bonsmara has negotiated great financing options with Standard Bank, AgriBank and FNB that makes it possible for you to buy outstanding genetics at this year’s auction. This is applicable to bulls and female animals.

I do not know about you, but at Hartebeestloop we have agreed to never buy new bulls and female animals without the option of a financing scheme. It makes perfect sense not to do it any other way!

Hope to see you on the 31st of May at the Hartebeestloop Auction

Is jou Bonsmara bul 'n langtermyn bate? Ek dink beslis so!
